The cave tour near Semuc Champey is one of the best things I’ve done in my life. Basically you spend an hour climbing and swimming through all these different rooms of the caves with only a candle for a light. There was one part where we went behind/under a waterfall and I couldn’t see a thing. I was just hanging on to the guide for dear life. What a blast! (Full disclosure…I don’t have a waterproof camera so this picture is stolen from the Google Machine. It’s pretty much the same image as what I experienced though).

People go to Semuc Champey for the beautiful stepped pools. Unfortunately, it rained so much the night before that I didn’t get this awesome view. This picture is “borrowed” from a blog of two French guys that were there just a few days after I was.

This is the view that I got when I was there. Due to the large amount of rain, the pools were all brown as opposed to being tinted with blue.

After the long climb up to the viewpoint, we got to enjoy a swim in the pools.

The pools

The best way to get back the lodge from the pools is to ride in an inflatable tube along the river. In the brochure it states that it will take 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the water level/speed. I think we did it in 25 minutes since it had rained so much the night before. I was almost like white water rafting!

Most of the lodging in the Semuc Champey area are jungle resorts. We stayed at Utopia and it was amazing. It’s the type of place to just hang out for a few days to rest.

The views from Utopia were amazing.
