No tourist would ever go to the town of Palenque if it weren’t for the Mayan ruins. The city has nothing to offer. That being said, the ruins are amazing. I actually found a tour that left San Cristobal de las Casas at 5:00 AM (yes, AM) and went to two other sights with beautiful waterfalls and then continued on to the ruins. Technically the tour went back to San Cristobal, but since I was heading east anyway, I just had them drop me off at the bus station in Palenque instead of going all the way back. Some of the other people on the tour did the same thing. Most of them were doing overnight buses to continue on to the beaches as soon as possible. My next stop was only five hours away (too short for an overnight bus) so I had to stay the night in Palenque and take the 8:00 AM bus the next morning.

Agua Azul Waterfalls.

Misol-Ha Waterfalls.

Palenque was first inhabited in 100 BC and flourished around 630-740 AD.

This is the temple that’s on all the postcards. Unfortunately my picture’s not as great considering the tarp and the other tourists.

We (I was hanging out with a French-Canadian girl that was on the same tour) decided that we would only climb one building so we chose the one with the best view of all the ruins.

View from the other side.

This might be one of the best waterfalls I’ve ever seen. It looks like something that’s constructed in the middle of a shopping mall.

I really liked how the ruins and the jungle were becoming one.

The waterfalls are beautiful. .. thanks for sharing
No mushrooms? I stayed at the bottom of that hill at a camping place called Mirabella. It was awesome hearing the howler monkeys at night. The people there are so short and so dark! I tripped out when the little guy came out of the fields selling hongos. Good times! Such a magical spot
Your shopping mall comment is so funny- shouldn’t it be that the shopping mall waterfall looks like this, not the other way around?!
