Where in the world can you have your own private island?  In Utila, Honduras!  It’s rented out by a guy named Barry and it’s been in his family for 100 years or so.  On the island is a two bed/two bath house.  In the common room are extra mattresses so the house can sleep up to 14 total.  We had only seven people which worked out quite well.  You have to bring all your own food (including seasonings) and water so there is a bit of planning involved so that food doesn’t go to waste, but included in the price of the rent is one free delivery of supplies per day.  We rented the house for four days and three nights and we only had to request a delivery once for extra water (we went through 15 gallons of water in those four days).

Having your own island is quite an amazing experience.  The best part was that we could do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted.  We could make as much, or as little noise and we desired.  We weren’t constrained to restaurant opening hours so we ate whenever we were hungry.  It was also great to be able to cook our own food and not be dependent on eating out.

We were really hoping for good weather, but that didn’t happen.  We had one good day, but then the others were pretty stormy.  When we got back to Utila, it turned out that they had the same problems and many scuba dives and the ferries were cancelled.  We made the best of the poor weather though.  When it wasn’t raining we made sure to be outside.  When we were inside, we would pass the time by playing games.  We played Who said it, Would you rather, Biz Buzz, Charades, Pictionary, and Two truths and a lie.  We had a treasure hunt and basically had such a blast just hanging out with each other and relaxing.

It was a bit of culture shock to go back to Utila.  Utila is quite a small town, but it seemed like a metropolis after being on our own island for four days.  We also had to do civilized things like using money again and avoiding traffic in the street.  It felt a bit odd when we were walking to dinner because none of us had walked that long consecutively for four days.  It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience that I’ll never forget.

The house was basically two different buildings. On the right was the kitchen, common room, and a bathroom with shower. On the left were two bedrooms and one bathroom.

Our own little paradise for four days.

Our last view of the island as we were leaving. You can see how stormy it is. We actually weren’t even sure if the owner was going to come get us since the weather was so bad. We thought we might have to stay another night.
