Mérida was a cute little town, but the main sites are outside of town. I met three other girls in the hostel so we decided to rent a car and see some of these sites. I’m so glad we did as well. It would have been difficult to fit all this into one day if we were relying on buses. The roads in Mexico are quite good, but my main frustration (yes, as always, I was nominated as the driver) was with the speed bumps. Their way to control people’s speed is to put random speed bumps in the road. Sometime they sign them so that you can see it coming and slow down, other times not…Anyway, glad it’s a rental and not my car. A great day overall and we only got lost 2-3 times. 🙂

Here there are some openings in the ground above the cave. The tour guide said that many times they’ll find a dead animal who fell in (many times they were chased in by a predator).

From the parking lot of Cazuma Cenotes, we had to take this “railway car” to the actual cenotes. Despite the appearance, this isn’t a one way track. When another “car” comes along, the passengers get out and the workers pick up the car and move it off the track so the other one can get by. Then they pick it up again and put it back on the track and continue on their way.

Cenote #1. A cenote is simply natural pit, or sinkhole resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. The water was crystal blue and beautiful. This particular one was about 30 feet deep.
