After our group tour in Nothern India, Emma and I also wanted to see Southern India so we headed for the state of Kerala.

Our hotel, the Taj. We decided to treat ourselves a bit. This was a bit out of our price range, but it was nice for a few days.

This might seem like a random picture, but spirits are banned in most places in Kerala. The alcohol abuse problem is so bad in the state, that a law was recently passed outlawing all liqour. Many bar owners and bartenders committed suicide as their livelyhood was lost. Many hotels oppossed the law since they said it would hurt tourism. The state later changed the law allowing wine and beer, in some resturants, but spirits are only allowed in 5-star hotels. There are only 23 places in the whole state (39k sq km/15k sq miles) where you can buy spirits. Luckily our hotel was one of them.
