Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world at 120 km/75 miles long and 15 km/9 miles wide. It’s also the only place on Earth where a rainforest grows on sand. The aboriginal people called it K’Gari which meant paradise. The European names comes from Captain James Fraser who was the captain of the Stirling Castle. They were shipwrecked there in 1836. He died there and she survived with the help of aboriginal people. It’s also home to the purest form of dingo.

Our bus for the tour. You need to have a good 4×4 to drive on the island since it’s all sand. Many trucks still get bogged down even with 4×4.

Air Fraser is an actual company and is the only company to land and take off on a beach. Pilots want to train here so they can be eligible to work bringing supplies to the mining towns were there’s no official airstrip.

In Tin Can Bay, dolphins come every morning. Before the Europeans, the dolphins would work with the Aboriginal peoples. The dolphins would chase the fish into the nets and the people would feed them the left overs. They still show up every morning even though that practice is long gone. Different dolphins will show up based on which volunteers are there.
