Abel Tasman National Park is named after the Dutch explorer who was the first  European explorer to sight New Zealand in 1642.  It became a national park 300 years later in 1942.  It’s the smallest of New Zealand’s national parks, but it is the one most heavily visited mostly likely due to it’s 3-5 day trek which is quite popular.  There are multiple huts and campsites throughout the park so people can stop often.

Split Apple Rock. Scientist know that it was split by natural causes, but they don’t know how.

You can see why tramping through Abel Tasman is so popular. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

Beautiful hike…

I’m almost 1/2 way done. To the right is Torrent Bay which is the 1/2 way point and in the distance toward the left is Anchorage Bay, my stopping point.

This area is very tidal. These guys tried to take the low tide route.

The tide comes in at 2 inches per minute so while it was only to their knees when they made the decision to do the low tide route, at this point they are having to carry their backpacks on their heads.
